Episode 115: Sex Ed for Parents

Episode 115: Sex Ed for Parents

We talk often of sex education for kids and having "the talk", but what about us? What about parents who enter marriage ill-prepared or who don't know how to communicate their sexual needs and desires to each other?

This episode was inspired by a Homeschooling in Real Life listener who wrote to tell us that they didn't communicate beyond "don't do it" to their daughter and she became pregnant at 16, but that the underlying issue was their own lack of communication and sex ed for themselves. Join us and authors Barrett and Jenifer Johnson for a candid discussion on sex ed for parents.

Episode 114: When Your Kid Discovers Porn

It's a day none of us anticipates: the day our own kid discovers porn. So what now? How do we handle the conversation, the implications, and the follow-up? And for those of us who don't have kids who've yet been exposed to pornography, what are the conversations that need to take place now, ahead of that day when they see things that change their whole world?

On this episode of HomeschoolingIRL To Go, we're catching up with one of our favorite couples. Barrett and Jenifer Johnson have been married for 24 years and have raised/are raising 5 kids, from age 22 down to 7. They recently wrapped up 25 years of ministry to their local church and have begun INFO For Families, a ministry geared toward newlyweds, marriages at mid-life, and parents who want to help their kids enter marriage without a ton of sexual and relational baggage.

It was a late night when we Skyped with the Johnsons, and the four of us got a little silly. It's a fun episode, but we hope you'll come away feeling as if you know the Johnsons and can glean from their years of counseling experience!

This time we're talking with several parents who answer in response to what the young adults shared in episode 16. Fletch also interviews a high school health teacher about what she sees in her classroom. Is it indicative of what homeschoolers are exposed to, too?

Let's have the conversation!

Episode 16 - How Do I Talk to My Kids About Sex?

Sex. The unavoidable topic that looms large over our parenting, threatening a lot of us into a shame-faced presentation of the basics with our kids.

The problem is, so many of us don't love the way our own parents presented the topic of sex to us, or we feel like we were dunked into the junk of the world's bankrupt free-for-all, and so we either swing the pendulum or scratch our heads thinking, "I didn't realize this was going to be so difficult."

Join us as we talk to young adults about how the topic of sex ed was handled in their homes growing up, and listen as Barrett Johnson once again encourages us to raise kids with courage and boldness.
